Structuring product specifications for the web

Turning brochures and spec sheets into searchable, comparable product pages.

By Ocat Digital Marketing2 min read

Many businesses hold their most valuable product information in PDF brochures and spec sheets. That information is exactly what buyers need, but in a PDF it is hard to search, hard to compare and hard to read on a phone. Moving specifications onto your product pages, in a consistent structure, makes them far more useful.

From PDF to page

Start with your most popular products. For each one, take the specifications out of the brochure and publish them as text on the product page. Keep the PDF available as a download for people who want it, but do not rely on it as the only source.

Use consistent names and units

If one page says “Flow rate”, another says “Capacity” and a third says “Output”, customers cannot compare products. Choose one name for each attribute and use it everywhere. Do the same with units: decide whether you show litres per minute or cubic metres per hour, and be consistent. If you sell in several countries, consider showing both metric and imperial units.

Present specifications in a clear table

SpecificationExample value
ModelSP-100
Flow rate120 L/min
Maximum head45 m
Power1.5 kW
MaterialStainless steel

Use a real HTML table rather than an image of a table, so search engines and screen readers can read it.

Put the key details first

Most buyers look at a few specifications first. Show those near the top of the page, with the full table further down. A short summary such as “Stainless steel submersible pump, 120 L/min, for irrigation and borewells” helps visitors decide quickly whether to read on.

Add applications, not just numbers

Specifications tell people what a product is. Applications tell them whether it suits their situation. A short list of typical uses, industries or environments makes your specifications far more meaningful.

Handle variants clearly

Where a product comes in several sizes or ratings, show them in one comparison table on the same page rather than creating many near-identical pages.

Key takeaways

  • Publish specifications as text on the page, keeping PDFs as an extra download.
  • Use the same attribute names and units across every product.
  • Show key specifications first, and add applications to give numbers meaning.
